BU Certificate Program An Asset to MMP's AmeriCorps Program

A hallmark of Mass Mentoring Partnership’s AmeriCorps program is our partnership with Boston University, whereby our AmeriCorps members participate in a certificate program of youth development. Some of the brightest minds in the youth development space work at BU, and their expertise is an invaluable resource to the professional and personal development of AmeriCorps members serving with Mass Mentoring Partnership. Recently, Rosie McMahan, MMP’s AmeriCorps Ambassador of Mentoring Program Manager had the chance to speak to Professor Detris Adelabu, Chair of the Psychology and Human Development Department at the Boston University Wheelock College of Education and Human Development about the impact of the partnership.

Dr. Adelabu works alongside professors Scott Solberg and Jonathan Zaff to instruct our AmeriCorps members in the theory and practice of youth development. The course is replete with practical experience, in-depth discussion, and cutting edge research on the topic. The course empowers our AmeriCorps members to succeed in their roles as ambassadors of mentoring and provides them with skills and knowledge crucial to the betterment of the youth-serving field.

“I really wanted to emphasize the focus areas for us,” said Dr. Adelabu. “Positive Youth Development, a focus on Diversity Equity Inclusion, leadership, and evaluation are some of the overarching themes of the conversations we will have.”

“This stuff is the stuff that is at the core of why we’re doing the work that we’re doing,” said Rosie in response to Dr. Adelabu’s presentation of the course outline. “I’m really appreciative of the thoughtfulness and the level of concern that you bring.”

Dr. Adelabu ended the conversation with an emphasis on the collective goal of allowing youth to live their best lives, while also emphasizing how in building the skills to achieve that goal the program will provide significant benefits to the members of our Americorps program. It is a wonderful opportunity. Mass Mentoring Partnership is proud to be able to provide it to those who serve with us!To see the conversation in full, please see our video on the subject here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E9cMn7Ng6yI
