Mentors of Color Recruitment Campaign
DID YOU KNOW?

  • Of approximately 17,000 youths between the ages of 5 and 19 who have mentors, 63% are Latino or African American.
  • Of the approximately 9,000 adults who are mentors, 75% are Caucasian.
  • Based on Mass Mentoring’s research in 2006, nearly 5,000 children are waiting for mentors across the Commonwealth.
GOAL
To develop and implement a strategy to recruit more mentors that reflect the diversity of the youth served in our partner programs in the communities of Mattapan, Dorchester, and Roxbury.

OBJECTIVES
  • To influence men and men of color from diverse ethnic, cultural, and faith backgrounds to think about mentoring as a service to their community.
  • To identify events and organizations in the state where MMP can access more men of color.
  • To build relationships with faith-based communities as a strategy to reach more men of color and help leaders in those communities realize their special power to influence adults to mentor.
  • To increase public awareness about the need for men and men of color to volunteer in their communities.
  • To identify informal/formal mentoring programs in communities of color that are currently not in MMP network and assist with capacity building efforts.
KEY STRATEGIES
  • Creation of a 5-8 member advisory council comprised of business and community leaders.
  • Identification and recruitment of 2-3 mentor program that will become official campaign partners.
  • Conduct market research on how to effectively recruit men and people of color to volunteer.
  • Brand the campaign.
  • Develop a corps of MMP Volunteers to act as ambassadors of the campaign; attend events; community outreach; and assist with volunteer intake and tracking and other duties as needed.
  • Continuation of existing efforts to target African-American males to become volunteers (as well as other people of color and men), such as partnership expansion, volunteer fairs, etc.
