Meet the 2011-12 Highland Street Corps Ambassadors of Mentoring! This year's group of 17 has a wide range of backgrounds and experience. Read on for more details about our wonderful corps, and delve even deeper into their work (and minds!) over at the Highland Street Corps blog.
Ruben Carrizosa is serving at Hyde Square Task Force, where he will drive mentor recruitment efforts and develop the curriculum and operational systems for the Paths to College and Careers Program (PCCP). Ruben spent the summer volunteering in Tanzania, teaching English at the United African Alliance Community Center. He also worked as an after school teacher and baseball coach for Chestnut Hill School. Ruben has a B.A. in business administration from UMASS Amherst.

Patricia Hanson-Staples comes to the program with experience as a small-business owner of a successful cosmetology consultingfirm and as a medical records clerk at East Long Meadow Skilled Nursing Center. She is serving at Springfield School Volunteers and will be focused on formalizing and systemizing an outcomes evaluation plan and match support process to increase volunteer satisfaction and retention. She will also create a plan to increase consistent parent involvement in the program. Patricia has an Associate’s degree in business administration from County College of Morris in Randolph, NJ, and a B.S. in psychology from Bay Path College.
Emily Heaton is serving at Adoption & Foster Care (AFC) Mentoring, where she will remodel AFC's recruitment and marketing system to better identify and engage its mentors and mentees. The system will also sustain the organization’s visibility in the child welfare service field and in the community. After receiving her B.A. in English and anthropology from the University of Illinois, Emily packed up her car and moved from Illinois to Boston to serve as an Ambassador. Prior to serving with AFC, Emily volunteered with Big Brothers Big Sisters of America and The Crisis Nursery, which is a non-profit, free child-care organization to prevent child abuse and neglect.

Stephanie Lanza is originally from New Hampshire and received a B.A. in sociology and a minor in justice studies from the University of New Hampshire. Stephanie’s previous volunteer experience includes serving as a mentor with Big Brothers Big Sister in Portsmouth and through UNH's Wildcat youth mentor program. Stephanie will be serving at Community Group Inc. in Lawrence, where she will continue the development of a new mentoring program and explore ways to utilize alumni as a potential source for new mentors.
Lianna Mika served previously with AmeriCorps NCCC in Vicksburg, Mississippi where she completed multiple environmental and construction service projects. This year, Lianna is serving at Boston Area Health Education Center (BAHEC) in Boston. At BAHEC, Lianna will serve a crucial role helping the mentoring program move from a pilot to a formal BAHEC core program by providing ongoing evaluation and assessment to ensure it meets the needs of the mentors and students. Lianna holds a B.A. in psychology from UMASS Amherst.
Lila Milukas is serving at Worcester Youth Center and will continue the previous Ambassador's work of
developing a career-focused mentoring program. She will assess the needs of potential mentees who attend the WYC to determine the structure of the program. She will also recruit, train and support matches. Prior to serving as an Ambassador, Lila served a volunteer head mentor at African Community Education in Worcester. Lila holds a B.A. in geography from Clark University.
Julie Muller holds a B.A. in political science and women’s studies from Allegheny College in Pennsylvania and served as a leader on campus in multiple capacities. Julie has served as a mentor with the STARS After School Program in Meadville, PA and was team captain of the women’s soccer team, an Allegheny Trustee Scholar and a Distinguished Alden Scholar. She will be serving at Big Brothers Big Sister of Massachusetts Bay in Boston, where she will lead the expansion of the Workplace Mentoring Program, focusing on the goal of 100 workplace matches by the end of 2012.
Nate Pally is serving at Taunton Area School to Career Partnership to develop a strategy to evaluate the current mentoring program and ensure that the program outputs are meeting the desired outcomes. Nate has previous experience in education and career development, having worked as a representative for ITT Technical Institute and an enrollment counselor for the University of Phoenix. He has served as a Corps member with Jumpstart in 2001 and has been self-employed as a tutor for middle school youth in his home town of Randolph, MA. Nate holds a B.A. in sociology from UMASS Boston.
Kate Russell earned a B.A. in history with a minor in human development and anthropology from Colby
College, and an M.S.W. from Boston College. Kate is serving at Newton Community Service Center, where she will serve with The Newton Partnership director and program staff to create a high-functioning mentoring collaborative in Newton to recruit and place mentors. Kate comes to the program with years of experience in youth development, having interned as a Guidance Counselor at Newton North High School and a developmental specialist with Jewish Community Center. She also served as an AmeriCorps VISTA in Maine in 2008.
Arielle Sobov is serving at For Kids Only After School (FKO) to formalize and strengthen FKO’s existing mentoring practices and enhance FKO’s ability to serve youth with special needs. Arielle holds a B.A. in journalism with a minor in fine arts from Quinnipiac University in Connecticut, where she was a member of the School of Communications Honor Society Lambda Pi Eta. Before joining the Corps, Arielle worked as an administrative assistant for Emess Management in New Jersey and spent a summer volunteering abroad in Ethiopia.
Aaron Wilson is serving with the SOAR program at Catholic Charities/South in Brockton to build upon the
existing structure of a mentoring program developed by the Ambassador in 2010-2011. He will develop, implement and evaluate a training curriculum, match support system and recruitment strategy with the goal of recruiting and supporting 20 matches by June 2012. Before serving with the program, Aaron was a substitute teacher with Brockton Public Schools and a human resources assistant with Harbor One. Aaron holds a B.S. in business management and administration from Bryant University.
Mofei Xu is serving at Quincy Asian Resources, Inc., where she will develop a sustainable academic mentoring program for immigrant students at Atlantic Middle School. Mofei received a B.A. in psychology from Boston University, where she was involved in numerous leadership activities, including serving as co-president and senior advisor for the BU China Care Fund. She is also founder of the Boston Latin Academy Red Cross Club, which she began while a student at the high school.
Senior Corps
Lise-Marie Hagen is serving her second year at Roxbury Community College to continue the development of a
mentoring program for first-generation college students, which was developed by an Ambassador in 2010. In the second year of service, Lise will be responsible for operating all aspects of the program as well as developing ongoing match support systems and systems for evaluation. She will also pilot a peer mentoring component in 2012. Prior to her service at RCC, Lise served as a childcare provider at Child Care in Brookline and a middle school tutor at St. John’s School in Guam. She has also served as a volunteer with Horizons for Homeless Children in Boston. She received a B.S. in psychology from Northeastern University.
Krystal Hope joined Mass Mentoring Partnership (MMP) as the volunteer recruitment and outreach associate/Ambassador in 2009. Krystal’s main charge as a Corps team leader is to develop and pilot a new strategy for providing support to the Corps around their goal of recruiting 200 new mentors by June 2012. She also manages and builds Ccorps alumni relations and leads match activities and mentor recruitment initiatives at MMP. Her previous experience includes various internships at Juniata College where she served as a summer orientation leader, planned events and analyzed business development. She received her B.S. in organizational communication from Juniata College.
Sarah Kim is serving at MMP as the research and program associate/Ambassador. As a team leader, Sarah
provides support to the Corps around field-wide projects and logistics. In addition, Sarah is charged with managing aspects of Mass Mentoring Counts 2010 and 2012, leading the Civic Core program database management pilot, and developing a strategy around research and knowledge sharing at MMP. She also supports the program manager with program evaluation. Prior to joining the team, Sarah served as an English teacher in Yanji, China and on staff at the Boston College Department of Counseling, Development & Educational Psychology. Sarah received her M.S. in developmental & educational psychology and her B.S. in human development from Boston College.
Devin Smith is serving at Science Club for Girls, where she serves with former Ambassador Allison Smith (’09 &’10), to develop, pilot and evaluate a team mentoring program to benefit middle and high school members in Cambridge and Lawrence. In 2010, Devin Served with Boston Partners in Education, where she led the organization’s efforts to develop and implement a social media strategy. Prior to serving with the program, Devin worked at Whole Foods as a social media/customer service liaison and as a mentor for 11- and 12-year-old girls in a media literacy program. She received a B.S. in global studies and sociology from Lesley University.
