New MMP AAOM Corps Focuses on Capacity Building and Service in the Commonwealth

Earlier this month, the 2020-2021 Class of AmeriCorps Ambassadors of Mentoring (AAOM) joined AmeriCorps members from across  the state to “Celebrate Service” at their Virtual Opening Day Ceremony.  This is the 13th year that MMP has partnered with AmeriCorps and Mass Service Alliance on the program. For nearly 11 months, 23 AAOMs will serve mentoring and youth-serving programs in both large cities and small communities from Boston to Pittsfield.

As Lisl Hacker, Director of Training and Technical Assistance at Mass Service Alliance, said: “One of the things that made the event so special were all of the unique videos from the members, each one different and engaging and showing off the personality of each program.” Click here to view our inspiring and uplifting video.

In the midst of a global pandemic that has caused unprecedented uncertainty and loss and has exposed inequity at every turn, AAOMs continue to help organizations build capacity and achieve sustainability through recruiting and training mentors, planning match activities, and creating opportunities to provide high quality programming within the community.  In the area of recruitment, AmeriCorps members undertake marketing, screening, interviewing, and building relationships with potential volunteers to expand the pool of quality mentors.

As one member stated recently in a conversation with Rosie McMahan, Manager of our AmeriCorps Program, It's hard to describe the joy I felt when I was able to make my first mentor/mentee match this fall. My coworker had received a request for a student who is a Haitian-Creole speaker, and she reached out to me because she knew I had interviewed a volunteer who also speaks Haitian-Creole. This volunteer's availability matched well with the student's, she was interested in working with someone exactly his age, and they both came from incredibly similar backgrounds. How fortunate is that? I ended that day feeling excited to create more matches just like this one over the coming weeks ahead.”
