The following blog entry is excerpted from Old Colony Y's Big Sister Big Brother match application to participate in the pre-game activities for Mentoring Night at Fenway Park.
10-year-old Zeliza from Old Colony Y's Big Sister Big Brother program had the honor of being a Bat Girl for the Red Sox-Indians game during Mentoring Night at Fenway Park on May 24. The game helped kickoff the annual Red Sox Mentoring Challenge, an initiative designed to recruit more caring adults as mentors.
She has been matched with her mentor, Kerri, since December 2011. During this time, Kerri has introduced Zeliza to new experiences and increased her self-confidence, resulting in Zeliza becoming more outgoing and talkative! Kerri says she looks for new ways to spend their time together in order to expose Zeliza to new experiences, further building her knowledge and self-concept.
Zeliza had spent several years on the Big Sister Big Brother waitlist for a mentor, and now that she has one she seems to be getting everything she can out of her relationship with Kerri. In fact, she nominated Kerri for Mentor of the Year in January 2013 at a Brockton mentor recognition event during National Mentoring Month. She said the first day she met Kerri, "I knew I could trust and depend on her."
