In 2015, Mark Eldridge, CEO and Founder of ALKU and Mass Mentoring Partnership board member, started the ALKU Scholarship award. This is a $20,000 educational scholarship, payable over four years, given to a rising high school senior who demonstrates academic achievement, leadership, community involvement and financial need. The candidate also must be involved in a supportive relationship with an adult.
Marta Pleitez is a senior at Barnstable High School with a 3.5 grade point average and is consistently a member of the honor roll. She lives in a single parent home with her father and two younger siblings. Her father has health problems that often require serious care. Along with taking care of her family and her schoolwork, she works every summer as well as helping to organize her father’s church band.
One of Marta’s biggest supporters is her mentor, Carol Trifone. They have been matched for six years through Big Brothers Big Sisters of Cape Cod & the Islands. Carol has taught Marta that she is unique and that God loves her. She has guided Marta about school and her grades have improved since they started their relationship. Marta’s mom left the family when she was eight and Marta says that, in some ways, Carol is like a second mom.
Marta plans to use the funds from the ALKU Scholarship to attend college next year and study nursing.
Congratulations Marta and thank you to her and Carol for providing such an uplifting example of the kind of supportive relationship that can help a young person reach their full potential!
