Meet George and Robert from Big Brothers Big Sisters of Central Mass/Metrowest

The following blog entry is excerpted from Big Brothers Big Sisters of Central Mass/Metrowest's match application to participate in the pre-game activities for Mentoring Night at Fenway Park.

14-year-old George from Big Brothers Big Sister of Central Mass/ Metrowest (BBBSCM) had the honor of throwing out a ceremonial first pitch for the Red Sox-Indians game during Mentoring Night at Fenway Park on May 24. The game helped kickoff our annual Red Sox Mentoring Challenge, an initiative designed to recruit more caring adults as mentors.

First pitch - Robert and GeorgeGeorge has been matched with Robert since late 2009. They spent the better part of two years in a site-based program before they decided that they wanted to take their relationship and match to the community-based program where they could have more opportunities to get together.

Now, being part of the community-based program, they do so many great things together! One thing they both have in common is working out and staying fit. George has been accompanying Robert to the gym, as well as completing a few different 5K-road races together. Robert just finished his first triathlon and George was so pumped for him and loved seeing all the photos and hearing his stories from the race. In fact, George is training for a mini-triathlon as well, because of Roberts’s successes.

There is no doubt that Robert has changed George’s life forever and vice versa. It’s clear that George looks up to Robert, and they always find things to do together! Robert on the other hand, feels so blessed to have met George. Having two young kids himself, he never misses time to spend with George, and George has always been integrated as part of his family as well. Sometimes, George and his mother go skiing with Robert's family!

The support from Robert to George and our agency has gone much further than just the match. Robert has served on the BBBSCM board for a number of years. He also heads up a team for Bose and has helped raise a large amount of money through the Rodman Ride for Kids.

Robert and George are the definition of a great match - so much dedication and love for each other, and support to their agency.
