With the start of National Mentoring Month, Mass Mentoring Partnership (MMP) launched a new video series to highlight the power of meaningful relationships. Helping to build this project gave me the opportunity to visit many of our partners and directly interact with the mentors and mentees they serve. As AmeriCorps ambassadors of mentoring, corps members serve at nonprofits throughout the state in a variety of roles. My service site is the Mass Mentoring Partnership office, which means that I do not have as many opportunities outside of our events to speak with mentors and mentees as other corps members have. That is why I was motivated to tell their stories and make the most of this project.
We began by talking with the Program Services team and reaching out to some of our formal programs in the Greater Boston area. Our partners were eager to be featured in this new social media project. Although I have experience with film journalism through both high school and college, it had been years since I last interviewed someone on camera. Luckily, everyone so far has been more than eager to share their experiences with me. I have really enjoyed hearing the stories they tell and the different perspectives that the mentors, mentees, and staff have. I have already heard from so many young people with great ambition, young people who have overcome adversity, and from the amazing people who work to help them reach their full potential.
After filming, I take the footage and edit it down to one-minute clips, which we post to our Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram using #MMPMentorMonday. The hardest part of the job is taking all the great stories and answers and trying to fit them into such a short window. Hopefully, our partners will be able to further utilize these powerful and truly remarkable stories in their own promotional videos. If you have ideas or want to be featured on #MMPMentorMonday, please email me at firstname.lastname@example.org.
