Holyoke Mayor Alex Morse to be honored as Champion of Mentoring

Alex Morse, Mayor of Holyoke, MA

Mass Mentoring Partnership (MMP), a statewide organization fueling the movement to expand quality mentoring for youth to meet the needs of communities across Massachusetts, will honor Holyoke Mayor Alex Morse with a Champions of Mentoring award at the 10th Anniversary of Champions of Mentoring breakfast at Fenway Park on May 29.

Mayor Morse was chosen for his work going above and beyond to strengthen the community of Holyoke through quality mentoring, including:

  • Becoming MMP’s first Mayor for Mentoring, a campaign to engage mayors from around Massachusetts in raising awareness of the need for more mentors in their city; recognizing local mentoring programs and their participants; and encouraging ways for individuals and communities to get involved in mentoring in their city
  • Advocating for mentoring to be part of the community strategy to improve academic preparedness, workforce development and promotion of healthy behaviors, including the launch of the Dean Technical High School Career Pathways mentoring program, a collaboration between MMP, the Boys & Girls Club of Greater Holyoke and the Holyoke Health Center, with the support of the First Niagara Bank Foundation
  • Actively promoting and supporting the growth of mentoring in Holyoke, including promoting mentoring on the City’s website, writing an op-ed on mentoring in local papers and appearing at National Mentoring Month and Back To School campaign events

“Mentoring programs are a proven and powerful community strategy that impacts the wide variety of critical social issues facing the young people of the City of Holyoke. I am proud to stand with Mass Mentoring and applaud its commitment to strengthen and expand mentoring programs in Holyoke,”  said Mayor Alex Morse.

“We are pleased to honor Mayor Alex Morse for his leadership in raising the profile of mentoring and its importance to the health of the Holyoke community. His commitment to ensuring that all youth in Holyoke have the support systems they need will continue to have a powerful impact in strengthening families, schools, businesses and the community as a whole,”  said Marty Martinez, Mass Mentoring Partnership’s President and CEO.

About 300 community leaders, stakeholders, program staff and business people will attend the event, which is presented by State Street. The event will also honor the Highland Street Foundation as a Champion of Mentoring. NESN’s Red Sox Studio Host Tom Caron will emcee and Red Sox Manager John Farrell will be a special guest.
